Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montemaggio
The Consorzio Chianti Classico in Februrary 2014 launched the new Chianti Classico pyramid. What actually defines this new Chianti Classico?
In the new Chianti Classico system of denomination, we have three tiers. Annata, Riserva and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione di Montemaggio.
A Winery can actually release the Annata on the Market by the 1st of October following the year of the harvest. For the Riserva at least 24 months are required of which at least 3 months in the bottle. When it comes about the Gran Selezione shall be produced with grapes from a specific vineyard or with a selection of the grapes from vineyards owned by the wine producer. This actually means that is enough that different properties ownership even if they are located in different subzones of the Chianti Classico district.

What About Fermentation?
Fermentation usually take place in conical wood trunk vats with controlled temperature. We try to keep always less than 26° C. Malolactic fermentation then undergoes in stainless steel as well as wooden vats. After about 30 months, maturations takes place partially in tonneux (5Hl). This brand new three-tier system of the Consorzio Chianti Classico was brought about to enhance the overall quality and to provide a top tier of the highest quality.
What is Gran Selezione?
The Original idea, behind the Gran Selezione, was beneficial for the Consortium, though it then, has been argued that the selection process of the yearly Gran Selezione wines is too subjective and is just giving rise to conflicts of interest in few case. Therefore it was quite difficult for us to decide how our Chianti Classico Gran Selezione di Montemaggio would have been different from our Riserva, but in the end we actually managed to come up with an effective solution, that guaranteed a very high quality. Our Sangiovese grapes for Gran Selezione will only be sourced from a particular vineyard. This specific vineyard is the only north facing and Alberello grown vineyard out of the entire estate. When it comes about the Riserva will be sourced from the other vineyards of the estate, hence resulting two completely different wines. The Current vintage of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is 2012.
